Security Officer Involved In Shooting Near Preschool In Southwest Portland

Portland Police Bureau is conducting an investigation into a shooting involving a security officer at a preschool in Southwest Portland, confirming that all children are safe. The incident occurred on Thursday, May 8, 2025, at approximately 11:50 a.m. when officers from the Central Precinct responded to reports of gunfire near the preschool located in the 6600 block of Southwest Capitol Highway.

Upon arrival, officers discovered an injured adult male in a nearby parking lot, who was subsequently transported to the hospital via ambulance. The security officer involved, who is employed by the preschool, remained on-site and is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation. Authorities have indicated that there are no suspects at large and that there is no immediate threat to the community.

Preliminary findings suggest that the shooting did not occur on the preschool premises. Parents and guardians are currently being informed, and arrangements are in place for them to safely pick up their children. While the shooting did not occur on school grounds, the proximity to the preschool necessitates a thorough investigation to ensure that no ongoing threats exist.

Security personnel are often employed at educational institutions to safeguard students and staff, and their presence can help prevent incidents from escalating. The communication strategy employed by the school and police is critical in maintaining trust with parents. By promptly notifying guardians and having a plan in place for child pick-up, they are alleviating potential panic and confusion.

As part of the investigation, Southwest Vermont Street has been closed between Southwest Capitol Highway and Southwest 24th Avenue. The public information officer is on the scene, with media staging set up at the intersection of Southwest 24th Avenue and Southwest Vermont Street.
