Portland police have identified the man killed in a downtown shooting Tuesday night as 25-year-old Malachi Bussey of Portland.
According to the Portland Police Bureau, officers responded at approximately 10:36 p.m. Tuesday to reports of gunfire near Southwest Naito Parkway and Southwest Harvey Milk Street. When officers arrived, they found two adult men suffering from gunshot wounds.
Officers provided life-saving aid until paramedics arrived. One victim was transported to a local hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening, while Bussey was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Oregon State Medical Examiner later confirmed Bussey’s identity and determined he died from homicide by gunshot.
Police said Bussey’s family has been notified and is requesting privacy at this time. The family also provided a photograph for public release.
Investigators say the preliminary investigation indicates the shooting occurred outside Tom McCall Waterfront Park after the conclusion of a festival that had taken place there over the weekend. Authorities said it remains unclear whether those involved in the shooting were attending or connected to the event.
No arrests have been made, and detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The Portland Police Bureau Homicide Unit is asking witnesses or anyone with photos, videos, or other information related to the shooting to come forward.
Detectives believe additional witnesses may not yet have spoken with investigators and say video or images captured before, during, or after the shooting could be critical to understanding exactly what happened.
Anyone with information is asked to contact detectives at 503-823-0479 and reference case number 26-130524.
