Student Shot Outside Portland’s Cleveland High School

Portland police officers responded to a 911 call reporting gunshots in Southeast Portland. The student that was shot arrived at a nearby hospital about 20 minutes later. When the shots were first reported, Cleveland High School went into lockdown. No one else at the school was injured, according to officials.

Classes were suspended the next day. The 16-year-old student is recovering from the injury. Students were released at 2:30 p.m. The school principal said that students who want to talk to an adult about the incident should reach out to school counselors.

The shooting outside of the school follows shootings near Jeff High School in North Portland earlier this year – one in October and another in November. Students were injured in both of those incidents.

Cleveland High principal Jo Ann Wadkins sent a message to families Monday afternoon. Wadkins said the school went into lockdown “in response to gunfire on school grounds” outside of the building.

In a message to media outlets, PPS officials confirmed the shooting with “continued frustration and sadness.” The statement read, “The safety of our students is our foremost priority and we stand in solidarity with those working to prevent senseless acts of gun violence in our community.”
