In 1945, Clara Peoples brought the Juneteenth tradition from Muskogee, Oklahoma, to her co-workers at the Kaiser Shipyards in Portland. Upon her arrival in Portland, she was surprised to discover that Juneteenth was unknown in this part of the country. Determined to share the significance of this historic day, Peoples introduced the holiday to her fellow workers during their break, marking the first Juneteenth Celebration in Oregon.
Peoples’ dedication to spreading awareness about Juneteenth did not stop there. In 1972, she played a pivotal role in initiating Portland’s annual citywide Juneteenth celebration. Her efforts ensured that the importance of Juneteenth would be recognized and celebrated by the wider community, fostering a sense of unity and understanding.
