Hand Grenades Washing Ashore Central Oregon Coastline

Newport made national news with the arrival of explosives on its coastline. Their police officers responded to calls from the Newport area between Yaquina Bay State Park and Agate Beach. The reports were of “explosive” hand grenades being found. The beach is about 110 miles southwest of Portland.

A release sent out stated that the devices are white and have a label attached to them that reads “Warning Explosive.” There has been a warning issued by law enforcement in Oregon. It is stated that at least three live hand grenades washed up on the shore of the beach which is along the state’s central coast.

Officers are stating that the three devices only have washed ashore on its beaches in that area so far. The Oregon State Police Bomb Squad responded and seized the devices. A grenade is an explosive weapon typically thrown by hand but can also be shot from the muzzle of a rifle (as a rifle grenade) or a grenade launcher. A pin is removed to detonate a hand grenade.

Not much more news about the explosives have come out. In addition, no incidents had been reported in connection to the devices washing ashore. On the hand grenades were labels that read it’s a Simulator Hand Grenade M116A. It was not immediately known where the devices are from and how they ended up in the water and eventually on shore.

Experts state that if a civilian encounter such a device, do not handle or attempt to move it. People are asked to call the local police department if they run across anything resembling explosives.
