“A shooting took place near an Islamic school and mosque involving two individuals who were acquainted. It is important to clarify that this incident was neither a school shooting nor a hate crime. Events like this highlight the essential need for our strong collaboration with the Muslim community. I appreciate the ongoing support and active involvement of the members of the PPB Muslim Advisory Council in promoting community safety and well-being.”
One person sustained injuries, while another was taken into custody following the shooting in the West Portland Park Neighborhood of Southwest Portland. On Thursday, October 17, 2024, at around 2:23 p.m., officers from the Central Precinct responded to reports of a shooting involving two men in the 10200 Block of Southwest Capitol Highway.
Upon arrival, they found an injured adult male, who was subsequently transported to a local hospital for treatment. The suspect in the shooting was located inside the Islamic School of Portland but exited without incident and was taken into custody. Additional officers conducted a thorough search of the school to ensure the safety of all individuals present, and a firearm was recovered.
Initial investigations indicate that the two men are familiar with each other and are connected to both the school and the nearby mosque. Officers have confirmed that the shooting occurred in the parking lot located at the top of a stairwell behind the school, rather than inside the building itself.
The PPB Command and Supervisors have been in contact with officials from the mosque and school, as well as members of the PPB Muslim Advisory Council. The PPB’s Enhanced Community Safety Team (ECST) has also responded to the scene to further investigate the incident.
