On Saturday, dark smoke filled the skies of Southeast Portland as a “wildland” fire engulfed Ross Island. Officials have confirmed that the fire is connected to the abandoned structures of the former Ross Island Sand and Gravel Co.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, but authorities have identified old abandoned equipment and tractor tires as the sources of the blaze. Land-based crews were able to access the burning areas on the island, focusing their efforts on extinguishing the flames that consumed the debris and tires.
Portland Fire and Rescue swiftly responded to the fire near the Willamette River’s east bank on Ross Island at approximately 4:43 p.m. Over 40 firefighters worked tirelessly to combat the flames from both the ground and the water. Fireboat 21 utilized water from the nearby river to aid in the firefighting efforts.
Deputy Chief of Emergency Operations, Corey Wilson, stated that the crews faced significant challenges due to the winds, weather conditions, and dry grass in the area. The pile of debris and tires not only produced the dark smoke but also posed a threat as the flames spread to nearby trees and other piles of debris.
Efforts to fully extinguish the fire and prevent further reignition are ongoing. Authorities urge residents in the vicinity to remain cautious and vigilant. Updates will be provided as the situation develops. By 7:30 p.m., Portland Fire and Rescue reported that most of the fire had been contained. However, the persistence of the fire was attributed to the tires continuously reigniting, posing an ongoing challenge for the firefighters.
