Another Body Recovered From Willamette River At Cathedral Park, Investigation Underway

Portland Police confirmed that a body was found and retrieved from the Willamette River at the swimming dock in Cathedral Park. The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) River Patrol and a medical examiner promptly responded to the scene. Authorities noted that the body appeared to have been submerged for an extended period. “There are indications that the body had been in the water for some time,” stated MCSO Deputy John Plock.

While the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office has stated that the recent discoveries are not unusual for this time of year, they can cause public alarm. Authorities often emphasize that there is no evidence of foul play in these cases, which helps to alleviate some community concerns. However, each case is treated seriously and thoroughly investigated to ensure public safety.

In early May, reports emerged indicating that eight unrelated bodies had been recovered from Portland’s waterways within a month. At that time, the MCSO addressed public concerns, clarifying that while these discoveries are tragic, they are not uncommon for this season.

The sheriff’s office explained that seasonal factors play a significant role in these incidents. “Biology and increasing water temperatures contribute to the situation: Initially, a body will sink due to its density. As decomposition progresses and gas builds up, the body becomes less dense and eventually floats to the surface. Warmer water accelerates the natural decomposition process, which can lead to bodies rising more quickly.”

Additionally, the MCSO previously indicated that there was no evidence of foul play or connections between the bodies discovered in early May. Various factors contribute to the timing of these discoveries, including the warming water temperatures and increased recreational activity in the rivers during the spring months. The MCSO is leading a death investigation in conjunction with the medical examiner’s office, which will work to identify the deceased and ascertain the cause and manner of death.
