Portland Advances Toward Major League Baseball Team With New Legislation

A legislative measure aimed at bringing a Major League Baseball team to Portland is gaining significant traction. Senate Bill 110 builds on a previous law established in 2003, which allocated $150 million in financial backing for the long-desired professional baseball franchise that passionate fans have championed for decades. Notably, this bill seeks to generate revenue through taxes imposed on local and visiting players, as well as employees associated with the organization, rather than relying on public funds.

Under the proposed framework, these taxes would be utilized to repay bonds over a 30-year period. Following a public hearing and a subsequent work session on Monday, the Oregon Senate Committee on Finance and Revenue recommended that Senate Bill 110 proceed with a “do-pass” designation. If passed, the measure would enable lawmakers to allocate a substantial $800 million to support Portland’s endeavor to secure a baseball franchise, with the funding specifically directed toward the construction of a new ballpark.

At the initial public hearing for the measure earlier this month, proponents argued that investing in an MLB team would not only fulfill a long-standing dream for local baseball enthusiasts but also serve as a significant economic boost for the city as a whole. The Portland Diamond Project, which has been advocating for the establishment of a local franchise since its founding in 2017, has already identified Zidell Yards in the South Waterfront as a prime location for the proposed stadium.

Supporters of the bill contend that the infusion of resources for a new ballpark could lead to job creation, increased tourism, and a revitalized local economy. They envision a vibrant community hub that would attract not only baseball fans but also visitors from around the region, enhancing Portland’s cultural landscape.

As the momentum for this initiative continues to build, advocates remain hopeful that Portland is on the cusp of realizing its dream of hosting a Major League Baseball team. The next steps will involve further discussions among lawmakers and community stakeholders as they work together to bring this vision to fruition.
