Officers Recovered Stolen Firearm After Stopping A Shooting

The surge in firearm sales during the past few years has made guns more accessible, both legally and illegally. The proliferation of stolen firearms in Portland is a multifaceted problem with deep-rooted causes. On Saturday, September 2, 2023 at 2:14a.m., two officers were writing reports in a parking lot in the 16300 block of Southeast Division Street when they heard gunfire nearby. They immediately responded, located 2 involved vehicles, and detained the occupants.

Upon investigation it was revealed that a stolen handgun was recovered from one of the vehicles. The gun was stolen in Portland in October of 2018. A combination of factors, including increased gun ownership, lax storage practices, and opportunistic criminals, has contributed to this concerning issue.

The investigation into the firearm and shooting is continuing. The circumstances of the incident fell under the jurisdiction of the Portland Police Human Trafficking Unit (HTU). Detectives responded and investigated the incident. The suspected intended victim of the shooting, Steven Lustri, 45, of Gresham, was issued a criminal citation for Commercial Sexual Solicitation.

No one was injured. The United States has one of the highest rates of civilian gun ownership in the world, and Portland is no exception. With more firearms in homes, the opportunity for theft naturally increases. Failure to properly secure firearms in homes is a major contributor to theft. Many stolen firearms are taken from unsecured residences or vehicles, making it easier for criminals to acquire them.

Opportunistic thieves target firearms because they hold significant street value. These stolen guns can be used in criminal activities or sold on the black market, making them attractive targets for burglars. Advocating for stricter regulations on firearm sales, such as mandatory reporting of lost or stolen firearms, can help curb the illegal gun market.

Stolen firearms often end up in the hands of criminals, leading to an uptick in violent crimes, such as armed robberies and shootings. Endangering Communities: The presence of more illegal firearms in the community poses a direct threat to public safety, as innocent bystanders can become victims of gun violence.
