Chinese New Year In Portland

Portlanders are celebrating one of the biggest holidays in the world, Chinese New Year. The two-week festival features hanging red lanterns, a contact-free scavenger hunt, festival audio tour and cultural displays. It’s celebrated by over one-sixth of the world’s population and is one of the biggest revenue streams for local Chinese and Asian stores and venues.

The Chinese New Year festival is celebrating the Year of the Tiger from February 1-15, 2022. Here are the two ways you can participate in the Chinese New Year celebration at Lan Su Chinese Garden. The Year of the Tiger starting Tuesday, Feb. 1; while some celebrations were either canceled or limited this year due to the prevalence of the omicron variant, there are still a variety of cultural festivities to enjoy both online and in-person around the Portland-metro area.

The Lunar New Year marks the first day of the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar, which typically falls in late January or early February. Several East and Southeast Asian countries mark Lunar New Year with an array of cultural events and activities.

Also, in accordance with state and local guidelines, face masks are required for entry. Masks must completely cover nose and mouth. Gaiters and bandanas are not acceptable. If wearing a face mask that does not comply with Metro policy, Portland’5 will provide a face mask for patrons. 

Masks must be worn at all times except while eating or drinking for brief periods. Prolonged periods of mask removal are not permitted for eating or drinking – masks must be worn between bites and sips. The celebration at the Keller, 222 S.W. Clay St. in Portland, is organized by the Chinese Friendship Association of Portland, the Intel Chinese Employee Network and the Multnomah County Health Department.
