Portland: Best Foodie City In America, More Moving Out Than In

Portland keeps the good coming it’s way. Recently a report was published that states the City is the best Foodie City in the country. However, an analysis by the Portland Business Journal found the population of the metro area rose just 0.1% between 2020 and 2021. That’s much lower than in years past. That report shows more leaving the Rose City than  are coming.

In their report, WalletHub pointed out that all of the good and some bad. Being a foodie can be quite expensive, especially during the heavy inflation of 2022. Restaurant prices rose 8% between August 2021 and August 2022, according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics.

The BLS reports grocery store prices rose 8.3% between August 2021 and August 2022. WalletHub said the cities that ranked highest in its report cater to diners who prefer to cook at home, explore the local flavors, or both.

Below are the top 10 best food cities in America, according to WalletHub.

  • Portland, OR
  • Orlando, FL
  • Miami, FL
  • San Francisco, CA
  • Austin, TX
  • Sacramento, CA
  • Seattle, WA
  • Tampa, FL
  • Las Vegas, NV
  • San Diego, CA

Even though the food is good, people are still leaving. New data confirms that the City has reached it’s population peak. Fewer people are moving in than are moving out. The Portland Business Journal, found that when it comes to Multnomah County, it’s seen a net loss in people, especially higher income earners. Many high-earning residents relocated to Deschutes County. Numbers also show many people left Multnomah County for California, Arizona and Texas.

The journal’s analysis of data from the IRS shows that most people who left Multnomah County between 2019 and 2020 went to Clackamas County, then to Washington County, and thirdly, across the Columbia River to Clark County.

Experts attributed the population issue to several things, including families reevaluating their priorities and space during the pandemic, to high taxes, trash and crime.
