In Southeast Portland on the 15900 block of East Burnside Street, a suspect was targeting a former lover when the woman’s brother and 11 year old daughter were struck by the shooter. The shooter is identified as Rashad Calbert, 36, by the police. Calbert fled the area at about 7:30 p.m. and is still on the loose.
This is not an isolated incident. The couple had a recent case that was also domestic violence related. Calbert was arrested on domestic violence charges in November. He is accused of hitting the 11-year-old’s mother, with a baseball bat. The charges were dismissed in December. One of the shooting victims, the target’s brother, drove himself to the hospital, police said.
“He’s like, ‘You’re not going to open the door?’ And I said ‘No’ and he just started opening fire,” the man told sources, adding that he was shot in the hand. Neighbors in the Morgan Place Apartment complex on East Burnside Street and Southeast 159th Avenue said they hear gunfire on a daily basis, but “are shocked that this shooting put a child in the hospital”.
Police said the child was brought to a hospital by ambulance with injuries to her stomach and chest area. The girl was taken to a hospital by ambulance.
Calbert is wanted for pending charges that are likely to include second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon and unlawfully discharging a firearm in city limits. Calbert is described as being 5’7″ and weighing 140 pounds. He is known to use public transportation.
The shooting comes as the city of Portland faces ongoing issues of gun violence. Portland police confirmed 96 homicides in 2022, surpassing 2021’s record-setting 90 homicides, which was the deadliest year in the city’s modern history.
