A woman called police to SE 171st and Division on Sunday afternoon saying she was being held hostage. Officers knocked on the door and were then shot at through the door from the inside of the apartment. The woman was found dead and the suspect is in custody after a near 10-hour standoff with Portland Police.
Police did not return fire and no officers were hurt, according to PPB. The suspect fired at least 30 rounds at police earlier in the standoff. Many of the residential neighbors stayed outside in the cold for much of the night and could smell the burning tear gas police deployed from across the street. At one point, Burton, a neighbor, said police yelled at the suspect , “Stop shooting at police and your neighbors.”
The suspect was taken to an area hospital to be evaluated. Many Blacks see a person taken in by police after such an ordeal and think the person is white. Blacks are killed for far less to for nothing at all.
The suspect’s name has not been released. The victims name also has not been released by PPB. The Oregon State Medical Examiner will determine the cause of the woman’s death. Police aren’t sure if it was the same 911 caller. This was a multiple organizational law enforcement effort. The Gresham Police Department, East Metro SWAT and the Vancouver Police Department assisted during the stand-off.
