Portland police disrupted an illegal street takeover early Monday near the Lloyd Center, citing four people, seizing three firearms and towing two vehicles connected to the incident.
Officers with the Portland Police Bureau responded around 12:50 a.m. to Northeast 13th Avenue and Northeast Multnomah Street, where an estimated 50 to 100 people had gathered and blocked the intersection while vehicles lined nearby streets.
Police said the event was one of two possible street takeovers reported in the early morning hours of March 23. A separate gathering near Northeast 158th Avenue and Northeast Airport Way in the Wilkes neighborhood dispersed before officers intervened.
At the Lloyd-area scene, officers called for additional resources before moving in to stop what police described as illegal and dangerous activity.
During the operation, officers stopped a Ford Mustang that had been observed performing stunts in the intersection and detained the driver. Police also stopped a black Mazda believed to have been used to control traffic during the event. Three occupants were removed from that vehicle.
Both vehicles were towed, and four individuals were cited in connection with the takeover. Police said three firearms were seized during the enforcement action.
Police said illegal street takeovers pose significant risks to participants, spectators and surrounding communities, often leading to crashes, injuries and the presence of weapons.
The Portland Police Bureau said it will continue proactive enforcement efforts aimed at deterring street takeovers, maintaining public safety and preventing similar gatherings from escalating.
