A law suit for $1.1M claims that students were attacked and the school did nothing. The suit says the two aggressors were allowed to return to school a few days later without warning, leaving victims feeling “more unsafe than ever.” Portland Public Schools eventually moved the two students to a different high school, while one of the students decided to transfer for her senior year, the suit states.
Information about the attacks stated that after several minutes of what appears to be heated conversation, a sweatshirt-clad student suddenly jumps into a booth and begins striking a student repeatedly, according to the soundless video. As the two struggle, the student with red hair leaps into the fray and also strikes the junior repeatedly, then pours water on the junior’s cell phone, according to the suit and the videos.
There were adults there viewing that. A school employee, reportedly seated at the far end of the dining area, packed up his bag as the encounter heated up and then walked past the fracas without stopping or engaging with other students watching the fight, according to the videos.
One woman escaped the fray with a bloody nose, bruises on her head and ongoing shoulder pain that has hindered the varsity athlete’s ability to play sports, the suit claims.
The district didn’t retain the original surveillance video best positioned to capture the fight, but a Grant High vice principal reviewing the video recorded a copy using a cellphone, the suit says.
