Suspect In Earlier Shooting Killed In Officer Involved Shooting

Neighbors in the Broadway Heights condominiums in Portland’s Southwest Hills neighborhood are asking questions about the killing of thirty year old Joel M. Arevalo. The police filed a summary of the incident to the Oregon Department of Justice, as required by state law.

The police said that two week ago, Are Ali was fatally shot by Portland because he refused to show his hands or follow orders from officers. The cops knew that he was suspected in a previous shooting. The Police reported that a gun was found next to the man’s body.

On the evening of Feb. 19, police were called to a disturbance. In route to the scene, shots were reportedly fired. Officers arrived to Southwest Broadway Drive and blocked off the street.

Arevalo was inside the east end of the condo complex. The reported stated that “(Arevalo) was within the area of the communications team for a length of time before being pointed out that he was the suspect.”

Law enforcement stated that they made a number of commands, including telling him to take his hands out of his pockets. The report does not detail what prompted the officers to fire their weapons.

Officers Kenney and Guevara remain on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol after shootings by police. No cops were injured. The death incident report stated that Arevalo had “fired shots at his friend.”
