A Multnomah County Sheriff’s deputy shot and injured a man in northeast Portland on Friday afternoon, as reported by the Portland Police Bureau (PPB). The incident unfolded around 3:45 p.m. when neighbors alerted authorities to a fight between two men. Upon arrival, police found one of the individuals involved and briefly detained him to determine if a crime had occurred. After investigating, officers concluded that no crime had taken place and subsequently released the man.
Details regarding the initial confrontation that led to the shooting have not yet been disclosed by authorities. In response to the shooting, Northeast 116th Avenue was closed off between Northeast Sandy Boulevard and Northeast Prescott Street.
Approximately 15 minutes after the man’s release, police received another call about suspicious circumstances involving a weapon in the same area, specifically at Northeast 116th Avenue and Northeast Nicole Place in the Parkrose Neighborhood. A PPB spokesperson indicated that officers were responding under the assumption that there had been a disturbance involving gunfire.
While Portland police were en route, they learned that a Multnomah County Sheriff’s deputy was already present and had discharged their weapon at a suspect. The injured man was promptly transported to the hospital by ambulance with serious injuries, but fortunately, no officers were harmed during the incident. Some property was reported damaged as a result of the gunfire exchange.
A semi-automatic handgun was recovered at the scene. Preliminary investigations revealed that another resident in the vicinity also fired shots during the altercation. That individual remained on site and is cooperating with the investigation, and no arrest has been made at this time.
