Portland Public Schools May Ban Guns From School Grounds

Portland Public Schools is discussing banning guns from school grounds. The proposed policy stems from a state law that took effect last September, which allows school districts to ban all guns from campuses. The discussion took place at a Portland Public Schools meeting last week. Parents were clear on where they stand on guns in schools. This is coming after several mass shootings – including the school shooting in Texas.

The mass shooting at a Uvalde, Texas elementary school left 19 children and two teachers dead. The scene was angering to watch officers stopping parents from saving their children while police stand by and seem to do nothing until after the shooting was over. The school board will likely take it up at its next meeting on June 14.

It was the parents that passionately asked Oregon’s largest school district to approve a policy that would ban all guns on school grounds. The policy being considered stems from a new state law that took effect last September, which allows school districts to ban guns even when carried by someone with a concealed carry license.

This Texas shooting once again creates debate over school resource officers in Oregon resurfaces. But, this is about banning guns in schools. According to an analysis from Oregon Public Broadcasting, PPS is one of nearly 200 school districts across Oregon that still hasn’t adopted that ban.

Not everyone feels the same. While some fought to implement the policy during Wednesday’s virtual session, others were not so sure about it. School resource officers were removed from Portland Public Schools two years ago amid protests against police violence in the wake of George Floyd’s murder. School resource officers will no longer patrol Portland schools
