In a significant move to promote student health and well-being, Portland Public Schools (PPS) has announced that breakfast and lunch will be provided free of charge to all students for the duration of the 2024-2025 school year. This initiative, revealed on Monday, stems from the district’s new eligibility for additional funding through Oregon’s Student Success Act.
Under the new program, families will not need to submit applications for free or reduced-price meals, as all students will be automatically enrolled. This streamlined approach aims to eliminate barriers to access, ensuring that every student can benefit from nutritious meals during the school day.
The breakfast offerings will include an entrée, a choice of fruit, and milk, while lunches will feature a selection of entrées, milk, and unlimited fruits and vegetables. To promote balanced nutrition, students are required to select at least three items, including a minimum of ½ cup of fruit and/or vegetables.
However, the district has implemented a key change: due to the nature of the program, cafeteria staff will no longer accept cash or check payments. This means that students who bring their own lunches from home will not be able to purchase milk separately. Instead, if they wish to have milk, they must also select two additional food items, such as a fruit and a vegetable, which will be provided at no charge.
This initiative is made possible thanks to the expansion of federal eligibility and additional funding from the state’s Student Success Act. PPS is optimistic that this program will help foster a healthier school environment and reduce food insecurity among students.
As the district rolls out this program, it encourages families to take advantage of the free meal options available, ensuring that all students can focus on their education without the distraction of hunger. With this change, PPS reaffirms its commitment to the success and well-being of its students, paving the way for a healthier future.
