The presence of surveillance cameras in public spaces can significantly impact crime rates. The visibility of surveillance cameras can deter potential criminals from committing offenses. Knowing they are being watched can make individuals think twice before engaging in illegal activities, particularly in areas where cameras are prominently displayed.
While surveillance can reduce crime in monitored areas, it may lead to a displacement effect, where criminals move their activities to less monitored locations. This can create challenges in ensuring comprehensive safety across an entire community.
