Portland Police Bureau (PPB) has made significant strides in dismantling a criminal ring involved in illegal gun possession, identity theft, and property theft. Several arrests have been made, and numerous stolen items, including firearms, vehicles, and identity documents, have been recovered.
Authorities believe the group targeted unlocked vehicles, stealing car keys, valuables, firearms, and credit cards. They would then use these stolen items to purchase Visa gift cards at grocery stores like Safeway and QFC, often exceeding transaction limits.
On November 22, PPB’s Focused Intervention Team executed two search warrants as part of a broader investigation spanning nine Oregon jurisdictions. This collaborative effort has led to the recovery of five firearms, four of which were reported stolen from various locations in the state. Additionally, a stolen Taser and vehicle were seized.
Seven individuals, including three teenage boys and four adults, were arrested during the search warrant service:
* A 16-year-old Portland boy was charged with multiple offenses, including unauthorized use of motor vehicles, possession of stolen vehicles, unlawful entry into vehicles, fraudulent use of credit cards, identity theft, computer crimes, unlawful possession of firearms, and other related charges.
* Elijah D. Sarinana, 18, of Portland was charged with unlawful possession of firearms and first-degree theft.
* Ali Ibrahim Mohamed, 20, of Portland was charged with unlawful entry into motor vehicles, fraudulent use of credit cards, identity theft, computer crime, and other outstanding warrants.
* A 17-year-old Portland boy was charged with unauthorized use of motor vehicles, possession of stolen vehicles, unlawful entry into vehicles, fraudulent use of credit cards, identity theft, computer crimes, unlawful possession of firearms, and other related charges.
* Another 17-year-old Portland boy was charged with unlawful possession of firearms and first-degree theft.
* Assad Osman, 20, of Portland was charged with unlawful possession of firearms, first-degree theft, and other outstanding warrants.
* Andrew Van Nguyen, 21, of Portland was charged with felon in possession of a firearm and first-degree theft.
The recovered stolen items included over seven identity cards, 35 credit cards, and 50 Visa gift cards. Police anticipate that further investigation may link the group to additional criminal activities. PPB urges the public to remain vigilant and take precautions to protect their belongings. Always lock your vehicle, remove valuables, and consider using steering wheel locks or other security devices.
