New Express Transit Service Makes Coastal Getaways More Accessible For Portland Residents

Planning a day trip to the Oregon coast has just become more convenient for Portland-area residents. Beginning Memorial Day weekend, an express transit service will operate between select Oregon beaches, providing a hassle-free travel option. The seasonal service will launch on Friday, May 23, and run through late August, with departures from Beaverton’s Sunset Transit Center every Friday to Sunday.

The Oregon Coast Visitors’ Association announced the initiative, highlighting the North Coast Express as part of the region’s expanding network of car-free travel solutions. “This new service offers a relaxing way to explore the North Coast without the need for a car,” they stated. “Riders can enjoy a full day of coastal activities or choose to extend their stay, thanks to flexible return-day ticketing.”

The Northbound Express will leave daily at 9:30 a.m., stopping at popular destinations including Seaside, Cannon Beach, and Astoria, before making its way back to Beaverton at 8:30 p.m. Meanwhile, the Southbound Express will depart at 10 a.m., with stops at Rockaway Beach and the Tillamook Creamery, returning at 8 p.m.

Passengers have the option to use either route for midday connections to other coastal attractions, but they must return to Beaverton on the route for which they purchased tickets. The Oregon Coast Visitors’ Association has indicated that this pilot project aims to reduce automobile use, promote tourism, and enhance access to local beaches. The initiative is in collaboration with EcoShuttle, a Sherwood-based company, and is projected to decrease travel-related carbon emissions by nearly 80%.

Roundtrip fares are set at $49.99 for travelers with one personal item and one carry-on. For those bringing larger items, such as bicycles or surfboards, the cost will be $59.99. Riders wishing to travel during the week should check NW Connector or Oregon POINT for alternative transit options.
