Multiple Injuries Reported In Mass Stabbing At Salem Homeless Shelter

Several individuals have sustained injuries following a mass stabbing incident in Oregon, as confirmed by local police. On Sunday, June 1, the Salem Police Department responded to reports of the stabbing and announced that a suspect is now in custody, according to a post on X.

The violent event took place at approximately 7:15 p.m. local time at the Men’s Mission homeless shelter operated by the Union Gospel Mission in downtown Salem. This facility, which spans 50,000 square feet, opened its doors in 2021. Reports indicate that eleven victims have been hospitalized due to various injuries sustained during the incident.

A message on the Union Gospel Mission of Salem’s website describes the organization’s mission: “By addressing immediate needs such as providing nourishing meals and safe shelter, the Union Gospel Mission of Salem aims to restore dignity and hope. We share the love and grace of Jesus Christ with those in need, empowering them to ultimately overcome homelessness for good.”

The injured individuals were transported to Salem Health Hospital for medical treatment. In response to the situation, police have cordoned off Commercial Street at D Street, redirecting traffic away from the area. While the suspect has only been identified as a male, no further details about him have been released.

According to Craig Smith, the executive director of the shelter, the suspect had recently arrived at the mission and spent Saturday night there. He was reportedly preparing to check in for a second night on Sunday when he became involved in a confrontation. Notably, the homeless shelter is located directly across from the Salem Police Department, highlighting the proximity of the incident to law enforcement.
