Portland Police identified 22-year-old Geavauntae Sherman as the man residents in the Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood reported seeing fatally shot in Raymond Park. Last Monday neighbors were startled by loud cracks in the neighborhood around 10 p.m. After the shots came the screams. The police have not identified any suspects.

One resident said that two men got into a car and drove away quickly. Police responded at 10 p.m. to learn that a man had been shot. He was helped into a car and left the scene. Police found the man in the car near Southeast 122nd Avenue and Division Street. Sherman died at the scene.

This took place after a party in the park earlier that evening. Residents said there was a barbecue, balloons and a group of about two dozen in the park around 9:45. The shot rang out around 10 p.m. followed by screaming. There was yelling reported. People began running away from the party area. No one came back to reclaim items left at the park that night.

No arrests have been made and police have not identified any suspects. Many residents are not happy knowing no one is in jail for the shooting. The southeast part of the city has been filled with criminal activity. Some are used to hearing more about crime in the northeast.

That same Monday, a man was found earlier that day dead in Northeast Portland on the 3200 block of Northeast 81st Avenue. Police did not say how the victim died, but residents reported hearing gunshots around 1:30 a.m.

Homicides are a major issue in Portland. These two deaths mark the 42nd and 43rd homicides in Portland so far in 2022. Portland saw 92 homicides in 2021.
