Icy Road Causes Highway Deaths

Highway 97 was reduced to one lane for about six hours during a crash investigation. State troopers said they were assisted by Chiloquin Fire and the Oregon Department of Transportation. The crash was reported at about 5:30 p.m. last Wednesday along Highway 97 near milepost 233, to the north of Chiloquin. MP 233 is just north of Hub City Chrome and 15-miles north of Chiloquin, Or.

Oregon State Police investigators say 33-year-old Yuriel Lucatero Campos was driving north on the highway in a silver Honda Odyssey when he “lost control due to icy road conditions.” The Honda crossed into oncoming traffic and hit a southbound semi-truck head-on. One of the passengers, a 7-year-old boy, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lucatero Campos and four passengers were transported by ambulance to Sky Lakes Medical Center. The young male passenger, 7, of San Ysidro, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. The good news, the semi truck driver operated by Christopher Lucio, 46, of Tulare, California, was not hurt, according to state police.
