The Portland Trail Blazers have officially announced a multi-year contract extension for head coach Chauncey Billups, as confirmed by General Manager Joe Cronin. The specific terms of the deal remain undisclosed, in accordance with team policy. In his last 40 games, Billups has led the Trail Blazers to achieve the third-best defensive rating in the NBA and the fifth-best rating for fourth-quarter defense. During this period, Portland also secured the 11th-best net rating in the league, all while fielding the second-youngest roster.
As of the 2024-25 season, the Trail Blazers rank 11th in steals and ninth in blocks per game, with Billups steadily improving the team’s defensive performance each season since 2022-23. Billups, who was appointed as head coach on June 27, 2021, is currently in his fourth season with the team and is celebrating his highest win total during the ongoing 2024-25 campaign. He has successfully established a strong team identity aimed at future growth.
At 48 years old, Billups was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame last October as part of the 2024 class. His illustrious playing career spanned 17 seasons across teams such as the Boston Celtics, Toronto Raptors, Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Detroit Pistons, New York Knicks, and Los Angeles Clippers. He was named the NBA Finals MVP in 2004 after leading the Pistons to a championship victory. A five-time All-Star, Billups received All-NBA Second Team honors in 2006 and All-NBA Third Team recognition in 2007 and 2009. Additionally, he was selected for the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 2005 and 2006.
Beyond his playing achievements, Billups earned the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award in 2008, the NBA Sportsmanship Award in 2009, and the inaugural Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award in 2013. His No. 1 jersey was retired by the Detroit Pistons in 2016. Over his career, Billups averaged 15.2 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 5.4 assists across 1,043 games.
The team’s head office sent out media information stating that player development has been crucial to the Trail Blazers’ success this season. Deni Avdija and Shaedon Sharpe have both recorded career-high points for the team, while second-year players Toumani Camara and Scoot Henderson have made notable improvements in their three-point shooting percentages.
Rookie Donovan Clingan has achieved the second-best rookie rebound percentage and the sixth-best rookie block percentage in history. Camara was recognized as the NBA’s Western Conference Player of the Month for February and, along with Henderson and Bryce McGowens, earned a spot as an NBA Rising Star during All-Star weekend this season.
