Three Killed In Portland, Gun Bills Introduced

Many Portlanders are unhappy with the constant flow of gun violence in the city. On Saturday, police responded to a report of a shooting near the intersection of North Foss Avenue and North Foss Court. Three people died in the shooting, according to the Portland Police Bureau. The shooting was near University Park in the Portsmouth neighborhood. Oregon Democratic lawmakers have introduced three bills that they hope will cut down on the gun violence within the state.

The police sent out information to the media on Saturday stating that the three victims were all in a car and were pronounced dead at the scene. The release also stated that the culprit(s) left the scene before police arrived and no arrests have been made.

Not much more than those details were released by the police about the circumstances of the shooting. For hours, residents had to maneuver around as North Foss Avenue was closed between North Houghton Street and North Willis Boulevard. The inconvenience has made some residents applaud lawmakers who are taking action.

The three bills introduced takes aim at gun vio6. House Bill 2005 would ban so-called “ghost guns,” which are homemade guns assembled from parts that can be purchased without a background check or serial number. House Bill 2006 would raise the age you could purchase a gun from 18 to 21 but would have specific exemptions for hunting, military service and law enforcement requirements.

Finally, Oregon House Bill 2007 would give local governments the ability to adopt rules restricting guns and concealed carry weapons in their buildings or on their grounds. These types of issue make for strange political bedfellows. Democratic lawmakers said they are working with Republicans on these bills.
