Black-Owned Kann, Portland’s It Restaurant

The it restaurant in Portland is Black-owned and is getting quite the accolades. Downtown Portland should make themselves guests and place their order at Kann, a Haitian restaurant by top chef extraordinaire Gregory Gourdet. Since opening in August, Kann has become the most heavily decorated restaurant in Portland’s history.

Not only has it been rated the top restaurant in Portland,  the New York Times praised it the month after it opened. It was named America’s best new restaurant by Esquire in November. People are in love with the Haitian cuisine that mix dishes that are traditional and delicious artistic creations.

The Southeast Portland wood-fired restaurant is every bit Caribbean Island with the inside displaying colorful images. The

barbacoa (bbq) where the meat falls off of the bones with incredible flavor was innovated in the modern Caribbean. Their meat-smoking tradition is called the envy of the world.

On the menu, there is much to choose:

taro root fritters braised-then-fried,

soursop shave ice, spicy collard greens in peanut cream, clairin, Haitian rhum,

diri ak djon djon, rice and lima beans tinted black from an earthy Haitian mushroom tea

beef rib rubbed with a blend of Haitian coffee and spices. Get it smoked and served with pickles and herbs.

It is going to be crowded and loud because it is popular and the food is good. Get some akra and plantain muffins. Then there is fish, les epis-brine chicken, grilled red cabbage and herring or the cauliflower in sour coconut cream. The dessert to get is the pineapple upside down cake.
