Senior Care Facility Forcing Residents Out The Same Day Due To State Shutdown

In a shocking turn of events, the State has ordered the immediate closure of Mt. Hood Senior Living, a residential and memory care facility in Sandy, Oregon. Families of the residents received an email on Friday afternoon, stating that their loved ones would need to vacate the facility by midnight. This abrupt decision has left many families in distress and scrambling to find alternative arrangements for their elderly relatives.

The Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS) has deemed Mt. Hood Senior Living a “serious threat to resident health and safety.” In an order issued to the facility’s ownership, DHS listed seven violations that raised concerns about the well-being of the residents. These violations include the lack of a safe and sanitary kitchen, inadequate staff training, and improper administration of medication.

One particularly troubling incident mentioned in the order is the death of a resident on December 25, 2023. The document states that the failure to properly care plan for this resident put them at risk and ultimately resulted in their untimely demise. This tragic event highlights the severity of the issues found at Mt. Hood Senior Living.

Adding to the facility’s troubles, it was already facing complaints in 2023. During an investigation in November, the state identified three licensure violations. These previous issues, combined with the recent findings, have led to the State’s decision to shut down the facility.

The closure of Mt. Hood Senior Living has also been marred by the unfortunate incident involving 81-year-old Ki Soon Hyun. According to Sandy police, Hyun wandered away from the memory care unit and was found dead approximately a day later. This devastating loss has further underscored the concerns regarding resident safety and the need for immediate action.

The closure of a senior care facility can have significant impacts on both the residents and their families. It disrupts the familiar routines and support systems that elderly individuals rely on for their well-being. The State must ensure that the affected residents are provided with appropriate and compassionate care during this transitional period.

As families search for new accommodations for their loved ones, it is crucial for them to thoroughly investigate potential facilities. The closure of Mt. Hood Senior Living has sparked discussions about the need for stricter oversight and regulation of senior care facilities. It is essential for authorities to take proactive measures to prevent such situations from arising in the future. The State must ensure that all senior care facilities adhere to the highest standards of care and safety to protect the well-being of their residents.
