Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler Demanding Office Workers To Return Downtown

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler is once again urging office workers to return downtown in an effort to revitalize the city’s economy and support local businesses. With the COVID-19 pandemic causing a significant decline in foot traffic and commerce, Mayor Wheeler is making a renewed push to bring back the vibrancy and vitality that once defined the heart of Portland.

Wheeler renewed his request in an open letter to central city employers on Thursday, saying it would match the requirement of city staff. “I again call on all other levels of government,” Wheeler wrote, “all private sector employers, academic institutions, not-for-profits and community-based organizations to follow the City’s lead of at least 20 hours of in-person work per week by January 1st, 2024, for remote/hybrid staff.”

Mayor Wheeler emphasized the importance of office workers returning to their workplaces in downtown Portland. He highlighted the impact that their absence has had on local businesses, including restaurants, cafes, and retail stores, which heavily rely on the daily influx of office workers for their survival.

Mayor Wheeler acknowledged that remote work has become the new norm for many employees due to the pandemic. However, he stressed the need for a balanced approach that combines remote work with in-person office attendance. He cited the benefits of face-to-face collaboration, team building, and the overall boost to the city’s economy that comes from having a bustling downtown.

Furthermore, the mayor assured the public that the city is committed to prioritizing the health and safety of its residents. As the city continues to navigate the challenges posed by the pandemic, Mayor Wheeler remains steadfast in his commitment to finding a balance that ensures the safety of residents while also supporting the economic recovery of downtown Portland. With ongoing efforts and collaboration between the city, businesses, and residents, there is hope that the downtown area will once again thrive with the return of office workers.
