Oregon’s Population Decline Slows Down In 2023, Census Bureau Reports

According to the latest estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau, Oregon was one of eight states that experienced a decline in population in 2023. However, the good news is that the rate of decrease has slowed down compared to previous years. The bureau’s Vintage 2023 population estimates, unveiled on Tuesday, shed light on the changing demographics across the country.

While many states across the nation saw an increase in their populations, Oregon’s numbers have been on a downward trend. The Census Bureau’s estimate indicates that the state’s population continued to drop throughout 2023. South Carolina and Florida were the fastest-growing states with a 1.7% and 1.6% increase in residents.

The reasons behind Oregon’s population decline are multifaceted. Factors such as outmigration, where residents leave the state for various reasons, and a lower birth rate contribute to the decrease. Economic conditions, housing affordability, and quality of life factors may influence individuals and families to seek opportunities elsewhere. Nationwide, the agency projected that more than 1.6 million people — or 0.5% of the population — moved to the U.S. this year. There was a 0.4% increase in 2022, and a 0.2% increase in 2021.

Despite the population decline, Oregon remains an attractive destination for many due to its natural beauty, vibrant cities, and diverse cultural scene. The state’s unique combination of coastal areas, lush forests, and picturesque landscapes continues to draw visitors and new residents alike.

The Census Bureau’s estimate serves as a reminder for policymakers and community leaders to address the underlying issues that contribute to population decline. The other states that experienced a population decline were New York, California, Illinois, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Hawaii and West Virginia.
