Bar Staff Render Aid After Shooting Incident in Northwest Portland

Staff at a bar in northwest Portland provided first aid to an individual who was shot and injured nearby shortly after midnight on Sunday, as reported by the bar’s owner. Police received the call regarding the incident at Northwest 13th Avenue and Northwest Glisan Street around 12:20 a.m., prompting long-time resident Steve Heard to wake up to the sounds of commotion.

The shooting occurred in a parking lot outside the Keen store, near the River Pig Saloon, where Heard noted that a typical crowd was gathered, with many congregating in the Keen parking area. Initially, he questioned whether he had actually heard a gunshot, as the crowd did not seem to react significantly.

The shooting incident in northwest Portland has raised concerns among local residents and businesses, particularly in an area known for its vibrant nightlife. The fact that bar staff provided first aid highlights the quick response and community support often found in such situations, emphasizing the importance of preparedness in emergency scenarios.

Witnesses, like Steve Heard, noted that the usual crowd was present at the time of the shooting, which may reflect the area’s popularity among locals and visitors. However, the lack of immediate reaction from the crowd could indicate that gunshots have become an unsettling but unfortunately familiar occurrence in some neighborhoods.

Residents and business owners may seek to implement strategies to enhance safety, such as increased security measures or community watch programs.

A spokesperson for the Portland Police Bureau confirmed that at least one individual sustained a gunshot wound. They also reported that another person might have been injured, but fled the scene, and officers were unable to locate them.
