2 Victims Of MAX Train Stabbings In Southeast

Two people were stabbed on a MAX train in Southeast Portland. The city is known for its vibrant public transportation system, has been grappling with a concerning issue in recent years about stabbings on the MAX (Metropolitan Area Express). One of the victims was transported to a hospital by ambulance, and the other was treated at the scene.

Two people were stabbed on the MAX train on Saturday evening, according to Portland Police Bureau. The stabbing happened at a MAX train while passing through Southeast Portland’s Lents neighborhood near 9500 Southeast Flavel Street and Interstate 205.

Incidents of stabbings on MAX trains have made headlines and deeply affected the community. A major stabbing several years ago included a white supremacist who tried to stab two Black teens and ended killing another man who tried to protect them. Transit agencies have bolstered security personnel on MAX trains and at stations to deter potential incidents and ensure a rapid response in emergencies. In one interview, an eye witness said the victims were Black and stabbed by a white person. She said it was clearly a hate crime.

In the most recent stabblings, both victims suffered non-life threatening injuries, Portland Police Public Information Officer Sergeant Kevin Allen said. One of the victims was transported to a hospital by ambulance, and the other was treated at the scene. Collaborative efforts between the city, transit agencies, and community organizations are vital in making MAX trains a safer and more inclusive mode of transportation for all residents and visitors.

During the investigation TriMet said the Green Line was disrupted due to a “security issue.” As of 9:30 p.m. Saturday the MAX Green Line resume its regular service. Police have not released what led up to the stabbings or whether they were looking for any suspects.
