Congresswoman Bonamici And Husband Struck At Crosswalk

Friday, January 13, 2023 Oregon Representative Suzanne Bonamici was walking through a crosswalk with her husband in Portland when a vehicle struck both parties, leaving the Congresswoman with a concussion. Bonamici’s husband is U.S. District Judge Mark Simon. She was treated for a concussion and laceration to her head and Simon was treated for minor injuries. Bonamici has been released from the hospital to recover at home.

Portland Police spokesman Kevin Allen said Bonamici and Simon were crossing the street within a crosswalk at 8:44 p.m. when a woman turned at low speed and knocked them to the ground. The couple was returning from the Martin Luther King Jr. Shabbat Service hosted by Congregation Beth Israel.

Authorities said the driver cooperated with police and stayed on the scene. The driver, whose name was not disclosed was not cited or arrested. The woman showed no sign of impairment, a police spokesperson. “The Congresswoman is expected to make a full recovery, but will be unable to attend the town hall meetings in Clatsop and Tillamook Counties today and other public events while she heals,” her spokesperson added.

Sunday, Bonamici, who’s 68, was well enough to express gratitude to those who had reached out. Saying, “Thank you to everyone for your well wishes, and to the first responders and health care workers who provided the care we needed,” Bonamici tweeted on Twitter. “My husband and I are continuing to recover at home, and are grateful for your kind thoughts and support.”

Bonamicis resume? Chair of the subcommittee on Civil rights and human services, elected to represent the Oregon’s 1st Congressional District, which includes Washington, Yamhill, Clatsop and Columbia counties, as well as parts of Multnomah County, and leader on the Education and Labor committee.
