The Largest EV supercharger site has opened in Sutherlin, Oregon on Clover Leaf Loop. This is located off of the I-5 on Highway 138. The Tesla Supercharger site has 51 stations to charge electric vehicles. The stations were a joint effort between the City of Sutherlin, the Sutherlin Chamber of Commerce, and Emerald Valley Electric Vehicle Association.
The EV charging station in Oregon is also the largest EV charging station in North America outside of California. “We are proud that Oregon is now home to the largest Supercharger site in North America, outside of California. Sutherlin is conveniently located, serving drivers traversing north to south, enabling many cars just one charging stop from Washington to California. We appreciate the community of Sutherlin in showing its full support and excitement at welcoming Tesla drivers to the city,” says Phil Gorski, President of Tesla Owners of Oregon.
This is all happening when other not so great news is going on. It was reported recently that Oregon will temporarily suspend rebates for buying or leasing an electric vehicle for a year starting in May. This is because too many people are applying and the program is running out of money.
The numbers show that there is a growing number of Oregonians buying or leasing electric vehicles, with over 60,600 registered in the state. The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality announced the suspension of the Clean Vehicle Rebate Program that has disbursed more than $71 million over five years to help people buy or lease roughly 25,000 of those vehicles. A fifth of the rebates went to low- and moderate-income households, state data shows.
The interest over the last several years has been great. Since the end of 2018, the state has offered two cash rebates for Oregon drivers who buy or lease electric vehicles or plug-in hybrids under $50,000. The standard rebate of up to $2,500 is available regardless of income and can be received at participating dealers. The “charge ahead” rebate of $5,000 is aimed at low- or moderate-income households and must be accessed via a mail-in application. The two rebates can be combined for up to $7,500 cash back.
