As he prepares to conclude his 14th and final term in Congress, U.S. Representative Earl Blumenauer is set to continue his civic engagement by joining the faculty at Portland State University (PSU). Blumenauer, who has served Oregon’s 3rd Congressional District since 1996, will take on the role of senior fellow and special advisor to PSU President Ann Cudd beginning in early January.
The announcement, made by the university this week, highlights Blumenauer’s commitment to public service and his dedication to fostering community partnerships. As a senior fellow, he will play a pivotal role at PSU’s Institute for Metropolitan Studies, a research program within the College of Urban and Public Affairs that focuses on addressing urban challenges through collaboration with local communities.
Founded in 1991 and supported by the Oregon Legislature, the Institute for Metropolitan Studies aims to enhance the quality of life for residents in the Portland metropolitan area by conducting research and facilitating partnerships. Blumenauer’s extensive experience in public policy and urban issues is expected to bring valuable insights and leadership to the institute.
“I am excited to join Portland State University and continue my work on issues that matter to our communities,” Blumenauer said in a statement. “PSU has a rich history of engaging with the public and driving positive change, and I look forward to contributing to that mission.”
During his tenure in Congress, Blumenauer has been known for his advocacy on transportation, urban development, and environmental sustainability. His transition to academia is seen as an opportunity to leverage his legislative experience to influence future generations of leaders and engage with pressing urban issues facing Portland.
Blumenauer’s appointment is anticipated to foster further collaboration between PSU and local governments, organizations, and residents, enhancing the university’s role as a hub for research and community engagement.
