The Art Institute of Portland Opens Eco Design Contest To Public

The Art Institute of Portland, in conjunction with Portland Fashion Week, has launched an “Eco Couture: Fashion Taking Action” contest where the winner will receive a $500 cash prize. The contest promotes sustainability through challenging participants to creatively re-purpose denim that makes a one-of-a-kind runway statement.

Sue Bonde, The Art Institute of Portland’s Fashion Show Director, says “Our goal is to spark creativity and a sustainable conversation; to ask the larger question: Fashion at what cost to the environment?  We want the fashion industry and consumers alike to consider the consequences of manufacturing practices and fast fashion.” Let’s take fashion to the next level.” She goes on to add…

“Designers need to take action; to make ‘Statement Pieces’ that are fashionable yet still say something about ethical practices.”  Dare to disrupt! Dare to innovate!”

The grand prizewinner of this year’s Eco Design Contest will be announced during Portland Fashion Week on the night of October 2nd. Fifteen looks will be selected from the submissions to appear on the runway as part of The Art Institute’s showcase, which will also feature Senior Collections.
