Join your friends, neighbors and thousands of Oregonians from across the state on Saturday, September 27 for the 30th Anniversary of the SOLVE Beach and Riverside Cleanup. Volunteers of all ages are neededonce again to remove invasive weeds, plant trees, and scour over 150 miles of beaches, rivers and parks before fall rains wash debris into storm drains and out to sea.

The SOLVE Beach and Riverside Cleanup is part of the International Coastal Cleanup and National Public Lands Day. Each year, approximately 5,000 volunteers head out to Oregon beaches, rivers, parks, neighborhoods and schools throughout the state. In addition to planting trees, removing non-native invasive plants, and restoring natural areas, over 110,000 volunteers have removed 1.5 million pounds of litter from Oregon’s waterways since 1984.
The top items volunteers find at each Beach and Riverside litter cleanup include cigarette filters, Styrofoam, plastic caps, fishing line, bottles and bags. Most plastics do not biodegrade, leaching chemicals into our waterways, and breaking down into tiny pieces that can be harmful to fish, birds and marine mammals.
“Every year, SOLVE volunteers submit data on what they collect during the event, and what they are finding is trash that comes from our everyday lives and households,” said Joy Irby, SOLVE Program Coordinator. “It’s important to remember that a plastic bottle on a city street can wind up on our coastline and that the ocean is truly always downstream.”
Oregonians are urged to join SOLVE on September 27 by registering for one of the 100 cleanup and restoration sites across the state to make a difference in their community. This year’s cleanup runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (dates and time may vary by site). Volunteers are encouraged to pre-register online at www.solveoregon.org, or by calling 503-844-9571 x332.
